Ceder Hills Festival

Went with the MacMichaels to sit on their new front lawn and watch the parade pass us by.  Kirk, Kathy and Jon came and later, Tina and girls.  It was a cute small town parade with Julia in the marching band, the governor of Utah, a huge ward primary, the missionaries, and a half hours worth of people and vehicles going by.  Kirk and Jon had run in a 5K earlier that morning, Jon coming in third (with a medal) and Kirk coming in fifth in the old man category.

The world's largest piggy bank?

There was a luau, a carnaval, and will be fireworks tonight.  Not a bad celebration.

Then we went over to Kirk's to watch Ghana defeat the USA.  No celebration there.

Kailin--at high school and college

Here are a few pics from graduation and WWU which we visited yesterday.

Tribute to Vickie Cornell Owens

I don't have access to my information since we are not at home, but in Seattle.  So, the best I can figure out is that Vickie was born somewhere in the mid fifties when I was in high school.  I remember her being a sweet little thing.  Once the family was taking a road trip up to the mountains when I was going through that teenage stuff where I didn't really want to go along and said so. Carolyn then asked me if they could leave the baby (Vickie) with me and, then as now, I couldn't say no even when I wanted to, so I said yes.  The plan being that I would get her to sleep and then read or whatever I had planned on doing.  I couldn't put her down else she would cry so I held her and finally got her to sleep.  But, alas, I still couldn't put her down.  She would wake up and cry.  So, I held her for four or five hours, until the family returned.  My plans foiled.

I recall that as a young girl she was a great cookie maker.  It was always fun to go to Carolyn's and have Vickie Cookies. Then, a little later she started sewing.  It seems that there was always a newly made dress for the Saturday Night Dance.

She and Glenn found each other and planned to be married.  When Glenn came out of the bishop's office, it was with the idea of a mission call rather than a temple recommend.  Vickie was gracious about it and waited the two years for him to return.

I remember the long anxious years when there was no baby in sight and then enormous joy when she was, at last, pregnant.  That little girl was a beauty and very loved.

Vickie was a trooper.  Even if things were hard, she soldiered on and showed so much love for others including Carolyn as she helped her from time to time.

My last contact with Vickie consisted of several phone calls from her as she updated me on happenings in her family.  She was still full of love and concern for her loved ones and was thoughtful enough to keep me posted.    I wanted to do something for her, but didn't know what.

I imagine her reunion with Terri and Allen and Amy and others of the family and can't help but think that she is a little bit lucky.  Her family will miss her terribly, but it must be comforting to know that she is healthy and happy and eternal---and waiting for each of us.

I graduated from high school 50 years ago

It suddenly occurred to me that its been 50 years since I graduated from high school and so I am wondering why I still feel as if I am eighteen years old.  Wayne and I are in Seattle to attend our oldest granddaughter's high school graduation. Kailin is a beautiful and talented eighteen year old and I think, excited to do all the graduation stuff.

I attended the all night party when I graduated (much to the dismay of some of my aunts.)  We went bowling, swimming, watched a movie, and had breakfast at my cousin's house.  I don't know what Kailin's involved last night but the party cost her $150.00 and she was not allowed to have her car at the school parking lot, take a purse, bag, or backpack, extra clothing---nothing but herself and the clothes on her back ---pockets were checked to make sure that they were empty.  All possible necessities were provided--contact solution, aspirin, personal hygiene etc, etc. School buses were arriving as we left the school, and Tara picked her up at six a.m. She plans to sleep all day.

As soon as I graduated, I started to work the night shift at Bird'sEye  and my summer was a nightmare. I headed off to BYU in the fall.  Kailin will head off to WWU (Western Washington University) this fall where they have strong music, and LDS Institute  programs.

At her graduation, I realized how ironic it is that we wax so lovingly about our high schools even as we are so very anxious to leave them.

Wayne's niece Breanna Carmack (who graduated from Meridian High School several years ago) saw the notice for my fiftieth year reunion for Meridian High School, on my bulletin board and had not realized that I had gone to school in Meridian.  Its getting hard to realize that I ever went to school anywhere.  And harder and harder to relate to those computer whiz teenagers who think that I went to school in the precolumbian age. It was definitely a simpler time.  Our rules said don't chew gum, run in the halls or wear jeans to school.  Kailin's rules said, don't bring a single thing but yourself to the party.

I love my computer, but I think I prefer my time.
